Norval Gallery's Grand Opening

2012 FALL ARTIST & WRITERS RESIDENCY AWARD

This residency opportunity is a unique way for young and emerging artists to cultivate new ideas, access a rich library of arts resources, learn about career-building opportunities, and develop an understanding of the art world from a business perspective.

ABOUT THE AWARD
Six emerging artists will receive a one-week (7 days) residency at our Open Studio in Prince Edward County. The selected applicants will be given a private studio space and given access to the Spark Box Studio equipment and resources, as well, winners will be provided with living accommodations for their week-long stay. They will also have access to career guidance from owners Chrissy Poitras and Kyle Topping, along with, local community members.The Fall Residency Award runs from August 1, 2012 to October 31, 2012. Please be advised that the award is for 7 consecutive days.. Please be advised that the award is for 7 consecutive days. Applying for the Residency Award gives artists the opportunity to practice an essential business skill in the art world: the application process.

Tin Pan North Mentoring Sessions

We're happy to let you know that we have a couple of Nashville pro songwriters in town that will be available for mentoring one-on-one sessions during Tin Pan North.

Marc-Alan Barnette and Rob Crosby will be available for sessions on Thursday and Friday, May 24 & 25.

Brief Bios:

Marc-Alan Barnette

Marc-Alan Barnette has been a Nashville fixture for many years and has worked with NSAI as an Adopt-A- Shop pro. He's known for his David Ball hit "Too Much Blood IN My Alcohol Level" and cuts with Shelby Lynne and John Berry.


Rob Crosby

Rob Crosby started off as a hit country artist with Arista Nashville and 3 top 20 hits in the early 90's. He then established himself with hits like "Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride, "She's More" by Andy Griggs and "Holdin' a Good Hand" by Lee Greenwood. Crosby's songs have been recorded by Blackhawk, Brooks & Dunn, Ty Herndon, Paul Overstreet, Carl Perkins, Restless Heart, Ricochet, Paul Simon, The Wilkinsons and Darryl Worley, among others.www.robcrosby.com

Mentoring Sessions

ONE ON ONE. A note by note, line by line assessment of your songs. Giving detailed information. Find out where your overall writing level is, what you need to do for that "Next Step."
30 minutes: $45. Between three and five songs depending on length of songs.
1 hour $65 Between 6 and 7 songs.

Career advice. Have questions about steps, process, pathways? This is when to get them.
"Write ups."

This is a two hour, focused songwriting teaching lesson. Songs are written around participant's ideas, structure, focus, lyrics, melody, phrasing, avoiding "2nd verse hell": Getting the most out of your message, writing to hooks, getting it all in a tight time framework. Cost: $225. Can be participated in by up to 3 people, $100 each.

NATIONAL CALL TO ARTISTS

Call to ArtistS: Canada Day Collaborative Art Project. Canada’s Capital Region. Deadline for receiving proposal: May 22, 2012, 3pm (Ottawa local time). The National Capital Commission (NCC) is seeking Canadian professional artists to develop an artistic project engaging Canadians in the creation of a temporary collaborative artwork at Major’s Hill Park in Canada’s Capital on July 1st, 2012 during Canada Day Celebrations. The collaborative project should be inspirational, creative and focused on iconic Canadian elements that engage individuals of all ages who attend Canada Day festivities in the Capital. The project must have the capability of being created by the artist in collaboration with the public over the course of the day, and completed as the evening approaches.  In the evening, the NCC will illuminate the artwork.  Please visit the NCC web site for updates and information or to submit a proposal.

Art in the Open 2012
